Fool’s Mate

72″x54″, Acrylic and Mixed Polymers on Canvas, June 2007

This huge (6′x4.5′) painting started my ongoing kaiju-inspired series. It depicts a game of chess between Godzilla and King Ghidorah with Gamera and Mothra watching, in which the earth is being destroyed in war behind them as Godzilla is defeated with a fool’s mate in the chess game. It’s painted in custom mixed acrylics which include “spices” to represent the moods of the different monsters, and a series of topcoats to improve the texture and tactile feel of the painting.
