The Blind Lizard

36″x48″ (41″x53″ inc. frame), Acrylic on canvas and wood, October 2007

“The Blind Lizard” is one of my favorite paintings, based on the John Everett Millais painting “The Blind Girl” — to quote from the wikipedia entry,

“The painting has been interpreted as an allegory of the senses, contrasting the experiences of the blind and sighted sisters. The former feels the warmth of the sun on her face, and fondles a leaf of grass, while the latter shields her eyes from the sun or rain and looks at the unusual spectacle of a double rainbow that has just appeared.”

This painting was done in a series of stages, beginning with a rough copy of the original, then a “lizardification” stage in which I painted over the figures with my own, and then a final stage in which many more characters were added. This painting sits in a custom frame.
